Mirror Mirror On the Wall

The Heart

Recently a friend gave me an antique
silver-plated mirror on a stand.

She knows about my claim-to-fame

of collecting old silver/silver plated items.

My collection has now expanded to over one hundred pieces. The mirror was cracked but Bonnie knew I would find a place in my special collection for this piece. She was correct – after polishing the base and removing the mirror, the stand will become the perfect picture frame for my grandchildren. This special gift will soon hold a picture of my precious little ones. The antique mirror will sit in a place of honor in my living room.

My granddaughters are about the age now that I was when I remember so vividly about another mirror. That mirror hung on a palace wall where a queen visited the mirror often, if not daily. Yes, you are correct, the mirror I am referring to is the mirror in Snow White.

The unforgettable scene that I remember went something like this . . . “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” Upon asking the mirror this question, the queen would wait with anticipation in hopes that she indeed was the fairest of the land. The actual answer she received was “…fame is thy beauty Majesty, but behold a lovely maiden I see … at last she is more fair than thee..”

When you look into your mirror, what is it that you hope to see? There is one thing that Snow White had that I want to be true in my life as well. The word that I am referring to is ‘White’. White as a new fallen snow. The Bible compares the washing away of my sin to the whiteness of snow.

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

 Isaiah 1:18

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”  Psalm 51:7

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”  1 John 1:7

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 6:23

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,”  Ephesians 2:8

“For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”  Hebrews 8:12

When I look into the mirror I see that the queen would even be jealous of me.  The queen’s beauty was anchored in fame, yet she was not the fairest to be seen in the land. The one who steals the show – is the one WHO HAS BEEN MADE white as snow.

My mirror tells me that I am as white as snow reflecting God’s grace.  Next time you look into a mirror remember…

The Bible says “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”  (Proverbs 31:30)  I wonder if Snow White feared the Lord?
