Sticks Stones Don’t Break Bones & Words Do Hurt Me

Sticks Stones Don’t Break Bones & Words Do Hurt Me

I remember as a child repeating the phrase “Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”.  In reality this has proven to be incorrect.  This statement  first appeared in The Christian Recorder of March 1862, a publication of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Psalm 51:10

Have you said or thought the following statement?

“We know exactly what that other person’s motives are, therefore I will judge the situation or just be plain offended.” If we are honest with ourselves, the answer is – YES. I know I have been guilty. We are quick to judge a conduct, speech, a response, an action..all because we feel that we see what is going on around us clearly. Wrong! The Bible is very clear that we can not even understand our own hearts.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

We, as God’s people, need to stop assuming and start practicing GRACE. Not judging every response by our own eyes but allowing room for “the benefit of the doubt” or what I like to  say “Extending Grace”.

Romans 12:18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

James 1:23-24 For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.… Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror.
